o What is the name and symbol of your element?
The name of my element is sulfur and the symbol is S o Where does the name of the element come from? How was it named? Sulfur was referred to in Genesis as brimstone
Assyrian texts dated around 700-600 BC refer to sulfur as the "product of the riverside", where its deposits could be found
o Where is the element found/how isolated?
Sulfur is commonly found in meteorites, volcanoes, hot springs, Epson salts, and barite o Why is the element important? Sulfur is used in medical applications
o What are some common uses of/for the element?
Sulfur is a minor constituent of fats, body fluids, and skeletal minerals o Are there important isotopes of the element? S-34 can be used for the production of the medical radioisotope Cl-34m and for S-35
Both S-33 and S-34 are used for genome research. Finally, S-36 has been used for the production of the radioisotopes S-37 and S-38 An allotrope of sulfur
Structure/Periodic Table Information
o What is the element’s atomic number? The atomic number of Sulfur is 16 o What is the element’s average atomic mass? The average atomic mass of Sulfur is 32.065 o In what period is the element found? Sulfur is found in the 3rd period o Name the group number and family to which your element belongs. Sulfur belongs to the Chalcogen group An allotrope of sulfur
Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical Properties (5)
• Color? Odor? Density? State of Matter at Room Temperature? Texture? Melting and Boiling Points?, etc… Sulfur is pale yellow, odorless, solid but brittle, it is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulphide.
Chemical Properties (3)
• How reactive is your element? (Will it combine with other elements/compounds?) Sulfur is relatively reactive, it burns in the air with a pale blue flame, which gives off a very strong, choking odor
• What types of substances does your element react with, and what substances are produced during the reaction? When Sulfur reacts with Magnesium, Magnesium Sulfide (MgS) is formed
When Sulfur reacts with Hydrogen, Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) • What other elements are chemically similar to your element?
Oxygen, Selenium, Tellurium, and Polonium An allotrope of sulfur
